Balanced approach to safety

A positive safety culture on worksites is best achieved with a proactive, rather than punitive approach. There should be no scope for the misuse of workplace health and safety laws for industrial relations agendas.

  • Bring back the requirement for union officers to hold valid entry permits and provide occupiers with 24-hour written notice prior to entry to investigate or represent a worker on a WHS issue.
  • Maximise safety outcomes by striking a balance between enforcement and engagement.
  • Managing silica in construction includes practical controls and reflects scale and nature of the risk.
  • Return the Workplace Exposure Standard for silica to 0.1mg/m3 (TWA) for Queensland.
  • Develop a single portal for notifying incidents to the QBCC and WHSQ.
