With new builds here in Queensland soon requiring a 7-star energy rating to be compliant, you’ve got your pick of stars to wish upon. When it comes to building these houses and units, chances are your wish will involve a simple, no-nonsense way of achieving said stars.

What are the new rules?

Under the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022, Queensland will increase its minimum energy efficiency rating for new houses and units. From 1 May 2024, new houses and units will need:

  • A 7-star rating for the building shell (roof, walls, windows, and floors) through energy efficiency features like good orientation and better insulation.
  • An energy use allowance, taking into account the home’s major appliances and any on-site renewable energy such as a solar system.

Several factors determine these requirements, including building class, zone, and floor area.

Keep the gas running

Natural gas is an important part of Australia’s diverse energy mix. Today, 6.5 million homes rely on natural gas for everything from controllable cooking to instant hot water, cosy fireplaces to firing up the barbie.

The beauty is, with the right solar capacity, your customers can still enjoy all the benefits of natural gas in their new dream home!

AGN has developed a 7 Star Selection Tool to simplify the process of understanding energy allowances, allowing you to opt for natural gas complemented by solar to meet the 7-star energy rating while giving people access to the gas cooktops, hot water and BBQs they love. AGN's approach to renewable gas

AGN is taking active steps to sustainable gas delivery. On their distribution networks, AGN is targeting 10 per cent renewable gas by volume by 2030. Their aim is to transition their distribution networks to 100% renewable gas by 2040 as a stretch target and by no later than 2050. This is consistent with Australian state and territory ambitions which collectively target being net zero carbon by 2050. Visit AGN's website to learn more.
