Two new incentives are on the table for small and family businesses, to support more of them to train apprentices, and grow Queensland’s workforce.
Following its successful pilot, the state government’s Small Business Apprenticeship Program has been extended with funding from Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), with another 2,000 places available.
Eligible small businesses receive a wage subsidy during training periods for a total of 32 weeks across the life of the apprenticeship, equivalent to 50 per cent of the typical wage for first- and second-year construction apprentices, and 25 per cent in the third and fourth years. The program extension is a direct response to Master Builders’ calls since the pilot was launched in October 2025.
The new TradieStart apprentice incentive is aimed at attracting a pipeline of construction apprentices around the state, again with joint funding from the state government and CSQ. A $10,000 base payment is available to eligible small businesses who employ their first-ever eligible apprentice; along with additional funding for those from priority cohorts including women and skilled migrants, mature workers aged over 21 years. $10,000 is also available for eligible medium and large employers and Group Training Organisations when they bring on apprentices from priority cohorts. The program will roll out from 1 August 2026.
