16 August 2024
From homes that encompass the beauty of their surrounds to exciting tourist attractions and vital community facilities, Central Queensland builders once again exceeded expectations at the 2024 Housing & Construction Awards.
Excitement was in the air at the formal event at The Rockhampton Leagues Club on Friday 16 August to celebrate the achievements of the local industry and honour its best and brightest businesses and individuals.
Hutchinson Builders swept the pool with a total of five Awards. Experience and standout advocacy for greater diversity in the industry saw Kristy Azzopardi honoured with the Women in Building Award. Hutchies’ work to bring Benevolent Living’s new facility to life netted them three Awards, including Residential Building (high-rise over 3 storeys) from $20 million up to $50 million, Community Accommodation for Specialist Disability, Aged Care and Nursing Homes, and Commercial Fitout up to $5 million, while the construction of the Eagle Enclosure at Rockhampton Zoo – a new home for popular resident Valkyrie the Wedgetail Eagle – earned them best Tourism and Leisure Facilities up to $10 million.
The event delivered four gongs for Corbett Homes, who took out the coveted Smyth Financial House of the Year Award, as well as Best Residential Kitchen and Individual Home from $1.5 million up to $2 million for luxurious modern farmhouse, Mildenhall 524. A harmonious blend of rustic charm and contemporary elegance also earned the team best Individual Home from $700,000 up to $850,000 for Watlington 267.
It was a hat-trick for T.F Woollam and Son, winning the prestigious Project of the Year Award and Education Facilities over $10 million for their exceptional workmanship and execution of the North Rockhampton Special School – New General Learning Area, as well as Health Facilities up to $20 million for the critical Emerald Hospital Emergency Department and Associated Works Upgrade.
Wolf Constructions also made it a triple, taking home the BUSSQ Building Super President’s Award and for contemporary masterpiece The Hart Build, while a decade of superior craftsmanship and business nous earned Wolf’s founder Tyler Wolfenden the Rising Star Award. Tyler and team’s stellar efforts on the beautiful Archer Hill project also earned them best Home Renovation Project from $750,000 up to $1 million.
Three was also the charm for Lyke Homes. Jack Coll was named Apprentice of the Year for his commitment to his trade and leadership qualities, while the team’s coastal craftsmanship was rewarded with Individual Home up to $400,000 for Ike’s Surf Shack at Yeppoon, and Individual Home from $1 million up to $1.5 million for Sandy Steps Beach House at Zilzie.
Master Builders Regional Manager – Central Queensland, Dean Phillips, congratulated the winners across all 35 categories.
“Our judges had an enjoyable but tough job selecting this year’s winners – every entry really raised the bar again, with outstanding craftsmanship and individual effort shining through,” Dean said.
“The finished products are breathtaking, but behind the scenes, our builders have faced and overcome plenty of challenges over the last 12 months, including labour shortages, extreme weather events, a 40 per cent jump in material over the last three years, and a wave of regulatory change.
“I am so proud of everything that the Central Queensland industry has and continues to achieve. It was great to have the opportunity to kick up our heels and applaud all our entrants and winners, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2025.”

With panoramic views to the Capricorn Coast and hinterland, Mildenhall 524 oozes luxury and modern farmhouse charm. Our judges praised builders Corbett Homes for fully realising the clients’ vision through magnificent finishes and detail at every turn, including the entryway timber columns and natural stone feature wall, repeated in the outdoor area, and the magnificent kitchen at the heart of the home. Winner of the 2024 Central Queensland BUSSQ Building Super President’s Award – Wolf Constructions for The Hart Build
The Hart Build has delivered quality construction as well as great value for money. The quality of the workmanship is something we’ve come to expect from Wolf Constructions. Tyler and his team nailed the design brief through perfect execution of features and finishes including the square set cornices. Our judges applauded the stunning contemporary kitchen and bathrooms, the views over the Fitzroy River from the kitchen, living, and back deck, and the self-contained guest zone, making for enviable family living.
