Emerging Women In Construction program extension targets young talent and industry growth

5 December 2025

Master Builders is celebrating the expansion of a powerful program connecting the next generation of women in building and construction with those already leading the way in the industry.

The Emerging Women in Construction (EWIC) program is now open to school-based apprentices, and trainees and cadets, after the peak industry body was awarded further funding from the Queensland Government’s Department of Trade, Employment and Training.

Launched in August 2024, the EWIC program is designed to link female apprentices with their peers and successful women in the industry, offering practical advice and fostering improvements in workplace culture, inclusion, and female participation.

Since its inception, EWIC has provided invaluable support and mentorship via phone, face-to-face, and online channels, as well as tailored training, events, and a dedicated online social group.

Master Builders Deputy CEO Sue-Ann Fresneda said the extended eligibility criteria would open even more doors for young women at what is a crucial time for industry.

“By including school-based apprentices, trainees and cadets, we can offer strong support from the early days of their career and encourage more young people to see the opportunities available to them,” Ms Fresneda said.

“There’s always a keen level of interest in working in our industry. While latest statistics show Queensland has a lower dropout rate compared to the rest of the nation, the number of new apprentices declined in the 12 months to March.

“It’s clear we need to do more to attract and retain young people to our industry – and the extended EWIC program provides us with that opportunity. Resolving retention challenges will help consolidate progress, create a foundation for enduring gender diversity, and ensure our workforce is aligned to growing demand.

“I have been so proud to witness the shared ground and growth of our EWIC mentors and mentees so far, and look forward to seeing even more women thrive, lead and shape the future of our industry through this program.”
