Sunshine Coast builders shine at awards night

7 August 2020

QUALITY craftsmanship and cutting-edge construction have seen local builders overcome the challenges of these uncertain times for the industry, at this year’s Master Builders Sunshine Coast Housing & Construction Awards.

The Awards ceremony was livestreamed to an at-home audience on Friday, 7 August, with more than 50 builders, projects and individuals recognised.

Hutchinson Builders dominated this year, taking home an amazing seven awards, including the coveted House of the Year and Project of the Year.

House of the Year, Seaview Terrace at Sunshine Beach was a “once-in-a-lifetime project”. The client was committed to the best possible environmental outcome, resulting in efficiencies including Hempcrete thermal walls, solar performing glass, and a rooftop garden being incorporated into this luxury home. Quality and sophistication are at its core, boasting six bedrooms, steam room, saunas and ice bath, recreation room, bar and theatre, and a 25m pool taking in the beach views. Seaview Terrace was also named Best Individual Home over $10 million and nabbed Best Residential Bathroom. C2 Projects’ carpentry, insulation, and plastering work on the home, which all adhered to a complex brief, were also recognised, earning them the Residential Contractor of the Year award.

Hutchinson Builders also got dual nods for Project of the Year and Best Retail Facilities over $5 million for Baringa Retail Centre – the first shopping precinct in the new Aura Development at Caloundra South. Hutchies’ Statiim-Yaga team and Stocklands worked with Traditional Land Owners, the Gubbi Gubbi people before, during and after construction. The project also achieved a 5-Green Star rating for sustainability.

Hutchies rounded out the construction categories with the Best Retail Facilities up to $5 million award for Baringa Tavern, and Best Commercial Building $5 million – $50 million for Parkridge Noosa Springs Stage 2.

Inspired by the Sunshine Coast’s local beaches, President’s Award winner Lentara 23 by Brighton Homes invokes a holiday vibe with its coastal meets Scandi style. From the sunny yellow wallpaper in the master suite to the beautiful deep blue kitchen island, this is a home full of life, which certainly lets life in. It was also named Best Display Home $251,000 – $350,000, while Brighton Homes also won Best Display Home $351,000 – $450,000 for its Harper 29 project.

Master Builders Sunshine Coast Regional Manager, Will Wilson, congratulated all 54 category winners.

“In the current economic climate, it’s more important than ever to create positivity and bolster our industry through programs like the Housing & Construction Awards – even if they looked a little different this year,” Mr Wilson said.

“The diversity and quality of building work across the Sunshine Coast is testament to the resilience of our local industry, and all of our 2020 entrants should be extremely proud of their achievements.

“With projects like the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club Redevelopment, University of the Sunshine Coast Energy Efficiency Though Innovation Project and Mooloolaba Beach Holiday Park Redevelopment & Coastal Pathway Upgrade also among the award winners, it’s fantastic to see our local communities benefiting from quality workmanship, and cutting-edge design.”

A destination for one of the fastest-growing populations in Australia

Winner of the 2020 Sunshine Coast Project of the Year – “Baringa Retail Centre” by Hutchinson Builders

At the heart of the first suburb in the $5 billion Aura development south of Caloundra, Baringa Retail Centre is an integral part of the community. Its construction has highlighted the sense of engagement with both the first inhabitants of the land and present-day residents. A reconciliation action plan, indigenous employment and engagement requirements were implemented; and the main entrance designed by a local indigenous artist.

The $20 million Stage 1 of the shopping precinct includes a Supa IGA Supermarket and loading docks; retail, dining and food tenancies; two-storey office/commercial centre and amenities; a 320-space carpark, including shade sails, and extensive hard and soft landscaping. The project achieved its 5- Green Star rating by incorporating solar, window shading, bike storage and use of sustainable products. It will service not only its residents but also the surrounding Bellvista and Bells Reach communities.

Judges’ comments:

“This dynamic urban heart complements other parts of the community now completed, including a state primary school, sports fields, civic square, skate and scooter plaza, and council community centre.”

“This project successfully brings together the best in retail, design, innovation and sustainability to create a centre that the whole community can benefit from and enjoy.”

Luxury and sustainability combine for a ‘once in a lifetime’ build

Winner of the 2020 Sunshine Coast House of the Year – “Seaview Terrace” by Hutchinson Builders

Scaling the dunes, this masterpiece has truly transformed its dramatic location on Sunshine Beach, appearing to blend into the landscape when viewed from the shoreline and national park. It is a truly unique structure that melds into the dunes and vegetation and belies the luxury beneath the asymmetrical and organic-shaped arches, leaving its inhabitants wanting for nothing.

Access was severely limited and so an off-site construction office and staging area were required for workers and deliveries. The complexity of design and immaculate finish are a true testament to Hutchinson Builders, and their team of trades. A journey of vision has culminated in a completed home of excellence – an impressive, modern beach house in a stunning coastal setting.

Judges’ comments:

“Drop-dead location in an elevated position nudging up against Noosa National Park. Ocean and national park outlook to the north and east. Street appeal is intriguing. Protected from the west by partly sand covered roof and Corten fascia with beachside grasses and succulents to blend in with the sand dune area on which it is situated.”

Beachside inspiration makes for an aspirational home

Winner of the 2020 Sunshine Coast President’s Award – “Lentara 23” by Brighton Homes

Perfectly balanced from front to back, the Lentara 23 grabs your attention the moment you walk in the door. This place is something special. This three-bedroom, two-bathroom home not only offers great value for money, but remarkable use of natural light and seamless indoor-outdoor areas in a spacious setting. The warm on-trend ochres were teamed with various shades of coastal blue, and light coastal oak. The outdoor dining area provides a great space to enjoy the sublime Sunshine Coast climate at any time of the day or night.

Judges’ comments:

“The combination of price and quality of the product make the Lentara 23 a house everyone can aspire to, and one that anyone will be proud to call home.”

An exceptional home for function, space and value.”
