Safety isn’t just a priority—it’s the foundation of every successful construction project. In Queensland, compliance with WorkSafe Queensland regulations ensures that builders and tradies operate in a secure environment, reducing risks and protecting lives.
Why safety matters
From site inspections to health monitoring, every step in workplace safety plays a crucial role in preventing accidents and ensuring compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws. Whether you're managing a large-scale construction site or a small trade business, implementing comprehensive safety measures is non-negotiable.
Key safety practices for builders & tradies
- Regular site inspections – Conduct thorough site shutdown safety inspections and new year site inspections to identify hazards early.
- Company quarterly toolbox meetings – Keep teams informed with company specific workplace health and safety (WHS) policy reviews to reinforce best practices.
- Site toolbox/safety meetings conducted monthly – Keep workers informed of project specific hazards/risks and controls.
- Safety equipment registers – Maintain an up-to-date personal protective equipment (PPE) register, test and tag register, and hazardous chemical register to ensure compliance.
- Fit testing & health monitoring – Conduct audiometric testing for new workers within three months and psychosocial risk assessments to safeguard worker well-being.
- Training & compliance – Schedule first aid training (every three years) and CPR training (annually) while keeping the licence and training register updated.
- Workplace inspections – Perform office/workshop inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, and harness & synthetic sling inspections to maintain a safe working environment.
- Preventing harassment & discrimination – Implement a sexual harassment and gender-based harassment prevention plan to foster a respectful workplace.
Stay compliant, stay safe
By integrating these safety fundamentals into your daily operations, you not only comply with WorkSafe Queensland regulations but also create a culture of safety that benefits everyone on-site.
Master Builders has developed a handy On-site Safety Calendar & Checklist so you can be across the monthly, quarterly and annual activities that you should be undertaking.
